Well I guess I am the first one to comment. I got my mammogram about 4 weeks ago. The woman who did the exam told me that the mammogram only sees about 40% of your breast tissue that's if you do not have breast implants. Early detection is key to survival of this type of cancer.

One fact is Over 40,000 people will die this year from breast cancer; about 400 of them will be men.

I go yearly for exams and will be going this coming month.

After having my Mother in Law pass away this past Feburary from breast cancer, I can't stress enough to all the readers how important your yearly exams are. My mother in law always had a yearly exam and just missed 1 exam by 6 months. Who knows if things could have turned out differently, if she had kept to her yearly schedule.

Thanks so much for having this wonderful giveaway and reminding everyone how important these exams are.

Breast cancer rates have nearly tripled in the United States over the last 60 years making it the second most common cancer in women. The lifetime risk for a woman to develop breast cancer in 1940 was 1 in 22. In 2008 it was up to 1 in 8.

I have not had my mammogram yet this year. I will have it in December.

I get my Mammo every November, and here is some info on Breast Cancer:

Diagnosis

Breast cancer is often first suspected when a lump is felt or when an abnormal area is found on a mammogram. Most of the time, these suspicious areas do not turn out to be cancer. But the only way to know for sure is through follow-up tests. Understanding these tests and how to interpret their results can help you take control of your situation and pick the course of action that is best for you.

This section of Understanding Breast Cancer discusses tests called biopsies, which involve the removal of cells or tissue (from the breast). Tests that help determine the most appropriate treatment if cancer is found are also covered.

Important fact - Men can get this as well as women. Found this out with a speaker at a cancer support group. My last mammogram was in April 07 and from this I was diagnosed with breast cancer.I had not felt or noticed anything wrong..So I remind all my friends to get their yearly mammogram. Due to a double mastectomy I do not do mammograms anymore but still have to check often to be sure nothing feels different because there is a very small chance I could get this again. semtaylor@yahoo.com

I think it is important to know that breast cancer isn't just a female disease. A male friend of ours just died of breast cancer last summer because he knew he had a lump but he ignored it until it was too late and by the time he got it checked out it has spread to his bones and lungs. I had a mammogram in January.

My suggestion to everyone don't just say OK and wait the 6 months because a lot can change in those few months. Demand a more in depth testing if everyone started complaining that insurances don't pay for the MRI's they will have to start!

According to the American Cancer Society, one in every eight women runs the risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer at some time during her life. Although having a family member who had breast cancer may increase your own risk, the majority of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease.

I get my mammogram every year in November and hold my breath each time until I see the results. My Grandmother had breast cancer (same type as you actually), so I am always aware of the possibility for myself.

I wanted to stop over here and thank you for sharing your story on MommyPR. You touched my heart with your strength and courage and I'm sure the hearts of many others as well!

Your breast cancer risk increases as you age.

My annual exam is scheduled for December.

I learned that anyone can get breast cancer, even men. I am 24 and have no family history of breast cancer (thankfully), so I do not have a mammogram scheduled.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women, that's scary!

I had my annual boob-squishing in February :)

Staying active (exercising) helps decrease your chances of breast cancer. I am about 10 years out on my mammogram but I am constantly on my mother case and remind her to get hers each time ( I am sure she still loves me :)

I had my yearly doctor's exam in August - no mammogram yet as I'm not old enough according to the guide lines.

FACT: Breast cancer is often first suspected when a lump is felt or when an abnormal area is found on a mammogram. Most of the time, these suspicious areas do not turn out to be cancer. But the only way to know for sure is through follow-up tests. Understanding these tests and how to interpret their results can help you take control of your situation and pick the course of action that is best for you.

Amen to early detection! I learned that even 400 men die of it each year, so everyone needs to check!!! I haven't had one this year... I'm not quite old enough to get them yearly. :) BUT I WILL. --Michelle, blogattoday[-at]gmaildotcom

Fact if you have a relative with breast cancer you are more likely to get breast cancer. My Mom lost her second breast to breast cancer in February. My mammogram was in September! Thanks! senekers@comcast.net

Breast cancer is not a single type of cancer; there are several cancers that can start in the breast. Different cancers are responsive to different treatments.

I have just scheduled my yearly visit to the gynecologist, which includes a breast exam. As I am in my 20s a mammogram is not yet recommended for me.

I get my mammogram yearly in the spring, usually the week of my birthday. I've learned that even if no one in your family has ever had breast cancer, there is always the risk that you can still get it, so it is always wise to have your mammogram yearly.

I've never had a mammogram. I just turned 35, but I DO know that monthly self-exams are extremely important and women when they reach 40 should have one yearly.

It is so important to have a yearly mammogram. I had mine back in May. My Mom died of breast cancer at age 49. Many men do not realize that they too could develop breast cancer. My Dad had a lump removed from his breast which thankfully
turned out not be cancer.

Family history of breast cancer -- You may also have a higher risk for breast cancer if you have a close relative has had breast, uterine, ovarian, or colon cancer. About 20 - 30% of women with breast cancer have a family history of the disease.
I found I had a lump a little over a year ago, but because of loss of insurance could not finish treatment. My mother had breast cancer about 3 years ago. Since she has been in remission
